Hi there, I'm new to this tribe, but I love the idea. I'm a very independant female traveler. I've been living in Namibia for 4 years and just returned. (part of it Peace Corps, part as an independant consultant)

I thought I would start a listing of where people have been just in case you want to contact another chick on safety/security/cost/interesting things/ jobs abroad for us broads... whatever.

I also thought I would use this as a way to meet ya'll instead of: "hey i'm a new member" :)

Thanx for the tribe- its a wonderful idea.
1 luv sistas,

Hi, I'm about to be traveling to mexico in a couple of months. could you suggest any places I should go? Or places I should avoid? Me and my two friends are about to head out on a long period of travel. seeing all the places we haven't seen, and hopefully landing in some sort of commune, or anarchist collective at the end of it all.
        • Re: been there done that...

          Sat, June 10, 2006 - 8:56 AM

the anarchist collective will be hard to find, but there are a few communes sprinkled around (more like wwoof farms actually) check out the wwoof mexico page and you can find a list of farms to go to if you dig that.

do you have any idea where you want to go or what you want to see? there's a lot to chose from...

WOW! SO many places! gawd! i'm overwhelmed. Now i have a more detailed question for ya'll. its broad though- (oh- no pun intended) - I wonder about traveling to SO many places and if you can REALLY absorb the place in a short amount of time. I'm a settler- i like to get in, get comfy and really learn about a place. I've been a few places for a long time. I would love to travel to more and learn this whole- bouncein around bit. but basically what i would like to know is- how long were you there? was it just a fly-by-visit or really working and living there?

But the list is great. I feel like doing some kindof stats on the most traveled places with this list! I'm really interested in Thiland right now by the way. REALLY interested. anyone work there before?

    thanx fellow broads abroad! :)

I'm with you Trish. I need some time to settle into the groove of a new place. Even when I travel around Guatemala (where I was born) I find myself just languishing in the spots I've already visited. I just can't ever get enough of the place. I will be travelling to Baja Cali. this weekend and am planning on languishing on the beach!

        Mon, April 10, 2006 - 2:28 PM
I lived in Switzerland. for a summer. In FR. for about 2 yrs. In Holland for about 4 months. I was in Greece on an Island for about 4 months. Then I have visited Germany for a bit, Spain, Italy, Canada (planted trees there for a few months), Mexico, Checkloslavakia, NYC, the whole W. coast, and Las Vegas a bunch of times.

It is a lot easier to take in a place when you really do hang around the place. I think even a month is really not enough for me. But I take what I can get these days. Being a single mom is an adventure in itself! Sooooo.. But I still love to travel and have done that with my child. It was still pretty fun. We took off to Paris for a week and Mexico for a week and visited friends out of town also. She is getting better and better about travelling.

Lots of travel around western the states alone in my pick up.

But more recently a year and a half in Kazakhstan.

I was born in Europe and travelled there a lot too, but it seems too long ago to be able to give any useful info to somebody going.

I normally travel without any plans.

I've only really travelled through Europe, and always as a student. I was never much for the "semester abroad" programs, as they didn't seem to be enough, which has led to packing for a move soon to England, where I was accepted into a university. I've convered all of Western Europe, and am slowly making my way into the Eastern countries. That leaves five more continents.

      >How did you get the job for Namibia?

well the short of it is:
Peace Corps then consious/unconsious/ constant networking... then syncronisity of meeting exactly the right people and being in exactly the right place at the right time - getting a job offer in my actual line of work... then letting it grow.

left it to come back and regroup so i can do more...

so ya- traveling to the right place but dwelling there for a good amount of time is what did it... still does it... for me.

(i'm LOVIN the travel logs here and that not only place but time - and time-ing - really do matter.)

I haven't done a ton of travelling so far (nothing terribly long term), with the exception of Mexico, Thailand and throughout the US and Canada.

I am travelling extensively next year however - starting in Spain, then Greece & Turkey. Then off to India. I'd love to connect with people who have experiences to share in these areas.

I've been to Turkey and Greece 4 times in the past 2 years and am planning another trip to Istanbul November 07 and then Turkey and Greece in June and October 08. I have lots to share with you if you'd like any suggestions, etc. What are your interests there?
  • Re: been there done that...

I have traveled through more than 60 countries. Those trips have been from one day to more than one year. Only 4 countries I have spent 2 months or more. Those countries are France, Tanzania, Malawi, and Indonesia.

Trish I have my Peace Corps interview in 3 days and then I'll have to deal with the whole medical and dental clearance. I'll probablly go to Francophone Africa with my French background but you never do know with the PC. What type of work did you do in the PC in Namibia?

Over 40 maybe 50 countries (on World Travelers, Most Traveled, etc... they count many that I would never really considered - like the Vatican City for one! but I guess it counts). Too many to list. Many more than once. And all but 2 US states.
Much more to see................ so little time.

          Re: been there done that...

Well, I didn't think Bogota was any more dangerous than a big city in the US. I stayed right in the center of the city and took buses all over town and never had any problems whatsoever. Also traveled up to San Andres de Socorro by bus with no problems, and by car to other areas. I do think the cities are safer than the countryside, or at least parts of it. Road travel from Colombia to Ecuador is supposedly not safe.

And IMHO, the Italians and Greeks are way crazier drivers than anyone I saw in Colombia (although the Colombians win for potholes in the roads).

It is a fabulously beautiful country and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
