Hey everyone,

I got this travel grant to study spoken word poetry all year next year. I'm going to the following cities/countries

Toronto, Montreal, Halifax Canada

London, England

Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Australia

Joburg, Durban, Capetown, South Africa (maybe)

Cuernavaca, Mexico

Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

If anyone has any tips on what neighborhoods/hostels/places to stay I should check out, please PLEASE let me know. I've got nothing really so far, and my travels begin in a month!!!

  • Sadly, I've never been to those places yet... But, if you don't mind my asking, where did you find this grant, sounds phenominal? (I have been looking to do something like that w/documentary studies for awhile).
    • There are only two grants in the country (that I know of) that are like it: The Watson Fellowship (www.watsonfellowship.org) and the Bristol Fellowship. The Watson Fellowship is open to certain universities and colleges across the US, and is highly competative (only 50 people are granted the fellowship every year). The Bristol is only open to students at my college, and typically only one is granted every year (I'm lucky, I know). You could always look into getting a fulbright. They are very competative as well, but provide similar opportunites. The difference is that the Watson and the Bristol are funded by an independent group, whereas the Fulbright is funded by the country to which you are applying.
What also might be useful is looking into grant centers that are based around the US (I'm assuming you're currently in the US. If not, I'm sure they're based internationally too, although I don't know where). Some good places are in Albequerque NM and New York City, NY. I know both of those cities have a grant center where you can basically look up and apply for many different grants.

      Hope this helps!!
