cell phones abroad

topic posted Thu, December 13, 2007 - 12:51 PM by  Parisa
I'm heading to Thailand next week and will be meeting up with friends at some point. Any suggestions on the use of a cell phone so I can get in touch with people? Buy one with a calling card? Rent one? Bring my own?

Thanks

if you currently have verizon wireless, they have a pretty good rental program. they fedex you the phone and you fedex it back (in a provided envelope) when you get home. You can even forward your own phone to that rental.

    Ive used it in Europe.

i travel a lot, so i bought an unlocked cellphone abroad. you can then just buy a SIM card and minutes for each different country.

you can unlock an old phone, just hit google for directions,

You can also go to many places overseas and pay a nominal fee to have your phone unlocked. I think I paid 10 GBP in London. Probably a bit more than most places would charge. You can also get pre-paid sims in most countries, including the US now. Buy them overseas when you get them, or pay a bit more and get one mailed to your home in the US before you leave!
