I drove across country Los Angeles to Florida and advertised my website www.SierraNightTide.com the entire way. The numbers are still low but they’re growing. Out of curiosity I checked Google Rank and was amazed to see that the url sierranighttide.com has a Google Ranking of 2 in less than two weeks! WooHoo!

I spent Christmas sleeping because I drove from New Orleans to Jacksonville, FL in one shot. After that I drove to my friend’s house and having been recuperating from the drive. I leave to go back on the road and throughout Florida Tuesday.

Great things have been happening and I’m really excited for the website. I tried eBay and currently have two auctions up at eBay but both times have generated no leads or sales so I think I’m going to dump eBay and use only my SEM methods. Nicola, one of the artists I’m working with has made two beautiful belly dancing headdresses and I can’t wait to showcase them with her bio. An idea came to me as I was looking at them. I’m going to create an Artist page displaying the artist’s picture and bio.

Lots of work yet to do

I need help!! I have somehow created a bit of a monster for myself. I mentioned to people that I was most definately traveling to this part of the world in the Spring, and I have amassed a group of 4-6 people who want to come with.

We only have about 12 days at most to see everything. I would rather spend time really experiencing rather then running around and killing myself to see it all.

Anyone have travel itineraries or anything they can share. I don't want this to be the same old same old. I really want to discover the places. The people I'm traveling with are from all over: Oman, Uganda, and the US.

Any help much appreciated.

thinking of studying abroad... with a kid!

I spent 5 weeks backpacking through Europe last summer and fell in love with travelling.

I've been trying to come up with various excuses ever since for returning, since I'd need some type of financial assistance to go abroad again (we all be po' students). The latest excuse is to find a study abroad program for undergraduate credit, since I have a little bit left before I'm done with my bachelor's degree.

Has anyone done a study abroad program in conjunction with travel? Any suggestions as to what to look for in a program, what to avoid, etc... I'm also interested in socially sustainable travel and would be horrified & ashamed if I ever got categorized as the "stereotypical" American abroad, so that'll probably give you a good clue about what kind of traveller I am.

And I'm especially interested in hearing your stories if you've done it as a single mom with your child tagging along.

I will be traveling from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL and Phoenix will be my first stop. What are some of the best and or funky free or inexpensive things to see or do in the Phoenix, AZ area? I'll be following hwy 10 so anything along the way that I should see I would love to hear about.

Also how cold does it get in January? I'll be there Jan 1st?

I know this may not be considered a revolutionary travel adventure but it is my first major real adventure where I will be traveling just to travel. No moving from one city to anther or weekend trips.... I will be traveling from Santa Monica California to Jacksonville, Florida than to the Keys and soon…. No more delays I've been putting this off for far too long. I'm making my plans and persistently trying to gain the little things I need to ensure my trip is successful and I'm safe.

... and all will be documented at http://www.sierranighttide.com/

Hopefully live soon!!!!

woohoo

favorite/necessary backpack features?

Hi I'm about to go on a year-long backpack/hitchhike/couch-surf trip in New Zealand, and am willing to drop some cash on a big new pack for it. What are everyone's favorite features of their backpacks, or the features they long for, or the features you think are about as useless as cephalopods on rollerskates?

For instance, I am torn between a pack a friend had which was effectively a giant dry-bag with shoulder straps, and lots and lots of easy-access pockets. Also torn between two small packs I can check, that don't have outside pockets, and one giant holds-everything-for-a-month backpack.

If you think you have a perfect pack, or near perfect, what is the make/model? I'd like to check it out.
(I'm 5'6, med-athletic build, female, and have lots and lots of stuff)

I am a single mom who has travelled to Berlin, Italy, Warsaw, lithuania and almost to kaliningrad with my awesome daughter. Next year we plan on hitting macedonia and the turkish and greek isles. I have not come across many single mamas who kept on being travellers after they had kids. I am looking to connect to women with a similar spirit.

Hi there, I'm new to this tribe, but I love the idea. I'm a very independant female traveler. I've been living in Namibia for 4 years and just returned. (part of it Peace Corps, part as an independant consultant)

I thought I would start a listing of where people have been just in case you want to contact another chick on safety/security/cost/interesting things/ jobs abroad for us broads... whatever.

I also thought I would use this as a way to meet ya'll instead of: "hey i'm a new member" :)

Thanx for the tribe- its a wonderful idea.
1 luv sistas,
t.

This possibility is still in its early gestation (read: "Well, gee, what do you think?"), but I might be headed to Tibet after Thanksgiving with a friend...

I posted over in the Cheap International Flights tribe about where might be best to fly from CA (China or Nepal/India), but I also wanted to poke my head in here and see if anyone had something to contribute. Not just about flight logistics, but also about traveling in that area.

See, I'm a woman. Ok, that much is apparent. But I'm also deaf. Which is not readily apparent at first sight, but still makes things that much more (potentially) interesting. Has anyone had experience traveling through Tibet (and China or Nepal) as a woman with a disability?

I'm usually on the independant traveler side, and usually wind up being a solo female traveler. I'm looking at going back to Europe for (at least) a year or so, and I've recently adopted a basset hound. If I wind up spending more than say 3 mos. there, I want to take him with me. But, I'm not comfortable checking him as "baggage" or the thought of having the poor boy in quarantine for a month. (I know that with proper documentation that shouldn't be a problem). I'd primarily be based out of Czech Republic.

Has anyone relocated with their beloved fido? Or, have you ever taken fido on a vacation with you? Thanks for the info!

So it looks like I'll be spending a week in Greece this September, and wanted input: what was your favorite place in greece? Did you go to Delphi, was it worth it? Did you have a favorite island? The best undiscovered beach? Did you go to one island and hang out, or did you master the ferries and try to get them all?

Hi! What a great site. I've been reading several threads about women travelling alone.... to other places.

Does anyone out there have experience and/or advice for the Island of St. Martin? I am going there for a week in Jan. 08, for my birthday. I'm not a wallflower, usually, and have been taking pretty good care of myself for a while, but I need better information than I've been able to find elsewhere on the web. OK, I need tons of info! Help?

BTW, I'm over 35 and single. Where's sauda now? roflmao

What this broad loves about living in Kerala/Indiahh

Hiya ;o)

Eye was sitting today in class and suddenly, it occured to me that parhaps eye.d like to share some of the things which eye absolutely loves about living in India... sometimes, it's a love/hate relationship eye haves with the Ma...however, the love- by far, outweighs the hate.
Eye loves all of the deep, profound, life changing, enhancements to m.eye be+ing eye have experienced in an exceedingly short expansi. On of time. Like, how to be see the Divine in aAlllll of life, even within the conundrums and daily aggravations (that one WILL experience here in India,) how to be stronger, more grounded, more patient, more open and expaaaanded. Eye learn, day after day, the gift of surrender and accept.ance. Eye loves the temples, the Sarees, the ancient tribal.nEss of the culture, the many, many wondering cows and bulls with painted horns. Eye loves rice fields, Cardamom or Tea plantations and the different hues of greEn which each possessss. Eye loves that it is sO organic..without being "organic" and trendy. It's back to the basics in deez parts, fer sure. Eye loves that spirituality is so over the top and out in da open...even if it is more cultural then connectiON-felt. It's not hushed away like it is in America. When people here are Christian..they are eminEnt.ly Christian..Hindu's are eminent.ly Hindu's and they ain't afraid to show it. The spiritual aspects of the culture are deeply woven into the very fabric of conscious exis.dance...even within the small minute details of day to day life. Eye loves Indian sunsets. Eye loves that people fart and burp in public. Eye loves the plethora of amazing birds which eye can see soarin above the forest cano.py from m.eye balcony. Eye loves that there are so many traditions, philosophies, and ancient schools of thought in which one can explore the self. Eye believes that the mysteries of life cAn be found in deez landz. Becuase of many thousands of years of transgression and the many billions of minds that have come and gone trough the timez...the essence of the Veda's have been lost on the main stream of India, however, one need not look too far or dig too deep to find the vast array of treasure that lies beneath the surface. The immense population spurt, Industrial revolution, and modern technology....have done incredible, unfathomable, amounts of damage- on an economic, ecological, and sociatal level, however, where eye lives- people stIll manage to be vEry much in tune with Mother Earth. They way that food is eaten with the hand- eye luv...it surely helps one connect more fully to the experience that is eating. Eye loves the food. The area in which eye live is very affluent, yet even though they may live in modern, mega homes...it is still as if they are living in a village 200 years ago. Eye loves the way that children's faces light up when they see me, espEciallies when 15 or 20 of thems crowds around me body temple..so eager to have me direct m.eye energy towards them with a simple smile. Eye loves the smell of incense that permEates evErywhere. Eye loves that it's so simplistic. Eye loves the childs-like inno.cense. Eye loves that the Keralean culture is sO round. If you've seen the way Malayalam is written...it's very round and continuo.US. That is how they think...they way their minds work. You can notice that even the word Malayalam is spelled the same back to front as from to back. A Keralean friend once told me the he'd never dream of saying "I'm leaving" he'd only say "I'll leave and come back" (even if he's not really coming back.) The sharpness that stings American culture is simply not present here. Desperate, at times- sure, but not sharp. Eye loves that people can walk with so many things balanced on their heads. Eye loves that a family of 5 will ride around on a motor bike. Eye loves m.eye Ayurveda pro.gram. Eye loves that the menz wear dresses. Eye loves tree houses. Eye loves bangles. Eye loves all of the many, many, many Palm Treez..... Kerala does, after all, mean the land of the Coconut treez. Eye loves the cool ass, wooden boats that eye witnEssess slice right through the ohhhhh, so crim.sOn sunny-sun dipping into the sea. Eye loves seeing Om symbols evErywhere. Eye loves the fruity, crazy, hand painted, public busses. Eye loves the fruity, crazy, hand painted, miniature temple on wheels-Keralean rickshaws. Eye loves the head wobbling and hand flicking. Eye loves the villages. Eye loves the back waters. Eye loves that people get on the train wearing no shoes….

can anyone personally recommend a hostel (with private rooms) in san francisco?

there seems to be at least a dozen hostels in the area and i'd love some feedback you all have on any you've stayed in.

what matters to me most is cleanliness and surrounding area. i like to be close to the action in the city.

Hi all -

I'm new here, so thanks in advance.

I'm planning a year long trip, starting next Feb with a few months in central & south america/polynesia/austrailia. I was wondering if anyone had any favorite backpacks they would recommend. I'm an average height and pretty good a packing light, but I plan to bring a few bigger items like a compact sleeping bag and pillow. Any suggestions?

So, long story short, my husband just isn't as excited about traveling as I am. We had been planning an extended tour of Central America and onto Asia for the upcoming year +or-. He's decided that he's not ready to leave his job, where I am MORE than ready. Now we are comprimising on my adventuring alone and him meeting up with me here and there along the circuit. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or anything similar. On one hand I'm excited for a solo adventure, but on the other I know I'll miss him terribly at times and wish I had him with me to share the experience.
Any advice or words of encouragement are accepted!

"The Gift of the Turbi", a (post) holiday classic

There was a man, a young man of good heart and character, and he had a bus that he loved. The bus was the shiny yellow and black apple of his eye, and their love was complete. He veritably lived inside of her, caressing her ample bumpers and buying her all manners of distilled waters and fancy spray paints.

And she loved him too; she loved him as strongly as a bus could love a man, that tall (10 feet) long legged (35 feet) 19,000 lb lady from Hayward, and things were good.

She was a comely bus, old fashioned values and smog, and was blessed by the lord with the gift of turbo, a lovely tress of curly cast iron that adorned her intake manifiold like a jewel in a Princess' tiara. It was their pride and her joy.

And the man also possessed one thing of great sentimental and personal value: a classic turbo boost sphygomometer given to him by his grandfather, a toxic filled graduated glass and brass mercury tube of wonderful complexity that he would lovingly plumb into his beloved when he wanted to see her smile. On sundays they would go to the park and he would gently lift her covers one by one, and there they would sit, whiling away the hours in the joy that only lovers share.

The couple was poor, and didn't drink the finest Rotella, nor could afford Michelins on the table except during special occasions. And then one year, the Saint Valentine's Day holiday approached, and they were both left in a quandary, how could this poor bus and man properly show their love on this special occasion?

Finally February 14th arrived, and after a hard day at the yard, the man came home to find his beloved bride sitting, parked near the one ton, behind the trailer, near the stack of pallets where he stored the brake drums and the power steering pumps, with tears/condensation in her headlights, but still shining the most lumenous of glows towards her chosen seat taker. And the man excitedly approached her, cleverly concealing a package from his beloved's low beams.

(break for commercial)

(Scene returns to idyllic backyard full of bus parts and Japanese and American pickups)

"Look my dear" he cried, "I have the finest of gifts for the bus that has been my veritable foundation of transportation for so many wonderful years." And from under his cloak, he produced a box. And there, inside the box was a lovely air heat exchanger from Cummins in Paris, painted beautiful flat black and glowing with a non reflective dullness that shone like the night. (with all necessary connectors and fasteners, and a roll of pink teflon tape)

"Oh my Goodness", she screamed in joy, "how could you ever have brought to me such a precious and costly gift my love?" She began to sigh, and with tears now welling up in her turn signals, she said "We are but a poor couple, rich in maintenance but with a limited parts budget..."

"Well" he replied, "my love for you springs internal, just like your fuel lines, and I confess I sold the turbo boost gage to get the lovely part. but it is OK, we can do it by ear my sweet, love can conquer any vaccuum problem."

And then he spotted a splendidly wrapped box sitting on the dash. "Is that for me my love?" he asked. "A gift from the bus whose broad hips and leaf spring suspension has seen me thru my longest travels and darkest hours... I can't wait to open it!"

He carefully separated the twine, removed the paper, and gently lifted the lid off the box. And there inside was a 3/16" thru 7/8" SAE and metric adapter set for classic sphygamometers, lovingly hand chromed from Taiwan.

And then tears began to well up in his eyes, as he walked, slowly, to the side (driver's side, door behind the radiator door) of his beloved, and lifted her skirts gently for the thousandth time.

For he knew the truth already........ . . . there in place of her lovely turbo was a simple metal plate, her chestnut colored curl now nothing more than a 5 X 8 piece of aluminum or cast or pot metal or something, (it had paint on it) and her flowing manifolds had been shorn to the scalp.

And as they looked at each other, and felt the love and tender mercies that only a long time committed driver and machine can hold dear, and nurture thru the years,-- there was peace, and then they drove, hand in wheel, down to Flying J for a quiet, intimate fill.

And life was good, and love had flourished and flew and soared for a brief minute on God's Green Earth.

("The Gift of the Turbi", a holiday classic)
available on CD and cassette

traveling to mexico/south america alone

hi all,

i have a chunk of time off (3 months), and i am considering going down to mexico or south america by myself. My tentative destinations are Oaxaca, the yucatan, peru and bolivia. I don't know spanish, but if i decide to go down there i will have about a month to learn as much spanish as possible before leaving for my trip. So i have some questions and was hoping for some constructive feedback. Is a month a good amount of time to gain some basic spanish skills before traveling? Does anyone have an experience of one of the places i am looking at going being better for women traveling alone than the others? Any other pointers or suggestions on traveling alone with limited spanish language knowledge will be very helpful. I am traveling between mid march through may. if anyone is going to be in any of those places and would like to meet up, let me know.
thanks

Looking For A Co-Conspirator for an Art Project in Morocco

There is something called the Degree Confluence Project. It's a web-based project at www.confluence.org, which aims to photograph every integer intersection of lat and long on the Earth's land area. You just go to an intersection point somewhere that hasn't been visited before, and take pictures, in each direction. The project is four years old and already more than half are done.

The intersection at 28N 12W, which is in southern Morocco near Layounne, has not yet been visited. I have obtained a 1:200,000 scale Russian military topographical map of the area (really! I'm serious!) which shoes it to be a hike of about 8km in over sand dunes no taller than 200m. In other words, one can simply walk in, after taking a taxi from the nearest (non-tourist!) town. This should be a good adventure! The area in question is actually part of a national park, and is known as the "plage blanc" (white beach.) Finally, I'll be completely off the beaten path, in the middle of the dune sea, 10 km from the nearest road, not a single other human in sight...

But there's more. Being a photographer with a sense of humor, I want to submit something more than the usual landscape photos of the confluence. I was thinking of taking a model and shooting a nude potraiture series out there. My general idea would be to shoot one series at dawn, one midday, one at sunset. The barren landscape (I suspect no signs of humans a t all) would be an amazing backdrop to the nude form, and might result in some really striking pictures.

Is anyone in the area and interested in modelling for this project? I would be doing this some time in the next couple weeks.

I'm quite serious, and quite on the level. I am not looking for a girlfriend -- bring your own boyfriend/partner along for the adventure if you like. I am looking for a fellow artist and adventurer. I can send you some of my other photographic work on request.

this is the introduction to a crossroads of the new and old tribes...
a merging of the ways of the rainbows and burners, of the urban and indigenous, of the ecstatic and technological.
The events manifesting these intentions will be barter oriented, sustainably empowered and holistically/transparently operated towards
a future for these gatherings superior to any expectations. Th event will synchronize with natural phenomena..Ex. Lunar Cycles, Eclipses, Harvests, Disaster Relief and Migrations of other species. Plans are underway to include the surviving homes of the indigenous american population. This is a safe space for non-violent expressions of faith, sexuality, politics, health, and lifestyle in general. The first movement would be planned for north america, Peace to ya and help me get the momentum for the transit online!

http://tribes.tribe.net/evolutionation

its a blank page right now, im seeking community support for the intention as inspiration for concepts to be condensed into an agenda. Dates are being projected but first lets see if all the high energy folks of the various tribes with an inner nomadic compass can get in the same tribe and drop a few seeds!

Moving to England

At the end of the month, I'm heading to Cambridge to begin four years of study at the university there. Despite leaving my home in the San Francisco Bay Area for a dorm across the ocean, I've only spent minimal time in my soon-to-be home country (I was there for a couple of days for admissions interviews and I recently had to take a pre-uni course for a week or so, however those short trips are the extent of my travels in the UK). I'll be living on the broke-artistic-college-student budget, so does anyone have any tips for getting by cheaply for quite some time in England? Also, any advice in general (sights, culture, common problems, etc.) would be most appreciated.

Best regards.

Thailand -- safe place to travel

I'm about to buy my airfare for a two to three week trip to Thailand in August. I'm going alone since I don't want to pay for an expensive tour group. I hear that Thailand is probably one of the safest countries for a woman to travel alone in. Is this true? Any precautions I should take?

suggestions for European winter travel?

I am already planning my next trip. Wondering what places gals here have had great experiences traveling in the winter alone. I will fly to the east coast of the US for Christmas, then since early January is always slow for me business wise anyway, I am thinking of taking a 2-week trip from there. I am considering trying to work out a lifestyle where I can live in Europe for part of the year, so am interested in exploring new destinations there to set up a base. So I've already been all around the British Isles, and to Spain, Portugal, and some of Italy. Am not too worried about weather, but with limited daylight hours, I'd like somewhere reasonably safe to walk about alone at night.

I know, not quite related, but it involves women, so it might be beneficial to some of you. Hello all. I was noticing that there were a number of health related questions in another tribe in which I belong, so looked into the existence of a tribe that might address women's health concerns .... and to my surprise, there were none. So, I decided to take it upon myself and start one >>> tribes.tribe.net/womenshealth

Please feel free to join, and spread the word!
Cheers,

Also, does anyone know how long it takes to get to the Gambia? I know it involves some succession of boats and bush taxis so if anyone could elaborate I would be grateful.

trekking in Bolivia

I'm trying to plan a trip to Bolivia do some of the world's best trekking from late June until mid-July....those times are not set in stone. As a woman, I'd rather not travel alone to South America. But I don't want to do one of these expensive, over-priced pre-arranged adventure tours either...I'd much rather give money to local trekking guides and the local community. Does anyone have any experience with this area? Anyone interested in going?

I'm looking for something reasonably priced but also comfy and centrally located with my own bathroom. Seeing as how I'm travelling alone, I'd like to find something to help ease my transition into a foreign country since I'm a little nervous.

I am trying to decide where to study spanish for a few weeks... and it is hard. I would like to go to the Pacific side because I will be spending the rest of the summer on the east side. All the sites say the beaches are beautiful, there is great surf and a lot of nature. Can anyone help? The first three places that seem good are Tamarindo, Samara and Domincal. But I can't figure out the differences, except Tamarindo is bigger.
Thanks!!!

Traveling Alone to Egypt in 2 1/2 Weeks - Advice?

Hey -
I am going to be doing a solo mish to egypt for about a month...I was originally going to go with my partner, but he can't make it now. I would love some advice on how to go about this escapade, what I may run into being a solo woman and such, and what I should avoid. Tips on where to stay would be great too, I don't have a ton of money, but I'm aware of the exchange rate and such and Egypt being a relatively cheap place to travel...suggestions?
Blessings

Israel with a child?

Last minute opportunity to do research in Israel & surrounding areas with a friend on a topic that is dear to my heart.... But funding is nonexistent.

And I have a child. I travelled through Europe for six weeks two summers ago, but my son stayed home with his dad. And upon returning home, I swore I wouldn't leave him for more than a few days. This opportunity means I'd have to be in Israel for a couple weeks at least, maybe longer. So, if I went, I'd bring my son along.

1) I don't have 3K for two plane tickets, which would be the cost according to the usual suspects (orbitz, etc). Any suggestions on ways to chop the ticket price?

2) Input on travelling through Israel with a 7-year-old? I'm a single mother, too, and I don't know what the culture is for single moms... Particularly *young* single moms. Out here in the SF bay area, I think I'm pretty sheltered from how harsh it can be on women if they're a single mom. (The local cost of living notwithstanding...)

(Ahem)

Hello womyn of the World

My name is Patrick Young, and I help poor folks fight Imperialism and improve their lives. I'm a travellin' fool, mostly to the third world. Lotsa time in Central America, the Caribbean, and SE Asia.
I also travel by my buses, I have 27 or them, so if you need a bus, parts, or just advice, just yell

I'm still new to this tribe thing, but I am a nice person, and have the best buses in the world. I use school buses to haul medical and material aid to some of poorest places in the world (Haiti, Chiapas Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) and buy and sell them, and bus parts to support the project. I take every penny i make and convert it directly back into school supplies, medical supplies, tools, generators, and whatever the folks ask for specifically, (no junk, no used clothing) and then drive it down in person (except Haiti, that's $6000 thru the Panama Canal. Ouch)

I sell buses to folks that are 100% functioning in every way when they leave my hands, and also give any body thirty days to return the bus if unsatisfied. Nobody ever has, but it's OK, I'll just sell it to somebody else. you will also get a lifetime of free advice before and after you get a bus from me, I'm avaiable 7 days a week within reason, and after having dismantled 14 buses, and owning about 60,I am pretty knowledgable about their inner workings. Also got lots of good used bus parts, at the best price anywhere in the US. Ii have no overhead, just my Mazda mini truck and some tools.

I have a website (below) so you can check out my work. have a good one
Has anyone been to Malta? Do you recommend it, or would you recommend a close by Island instead (like Sicily or Sardinia)?

December is off season, so what’s that like out there?

Back from Costa Rica

Hey folks. Just got back from Costa Rica. I can't tell you how WONDERFUL this country is....love love love it. I will admit I stayed away mostly from the Pacific coast, hearing from most that it was high rises and caters to high end touristy stuff.

The Caribbean Coast is so laid back and fun; it's close and similar to Jamaica. I would recommend visiting Porto Viejo (different from Puerta Vieja which is near the volcano). Porto Viejo is close proximity to the sufing Colones beach, Punta Uva sweet white beaches, Cahuita -- the town near the reef that has a lot of excursion points, and butts up against the jungle in the hills. Hire a driver or a personal guide for cheap and they'll lead you through the jungles to waterfalls. They'll point out all the birds and lizards and monkeys and sloths....and if you like them and they're daring, they'll take you into Panama for a few days to party.

THe carribean coast, and especially Porto Viejo, have a heavy rasta influence. But you can get hotels/bungalows for 15 bucks a night. YOu can eat like a queen for 8 bucks a day. They take American money, or you can exchange it. Fly into San Jose and grab a bus down there. It's a long and rough road for some of it. But the people are the sights are well worth it.

enjoy!

what do you choose if you NEED to travel, because every fiber of your being compels you to travel, but you are in love with someone who CAN'T travel (because of job, school, money, whatever). and say when you do try to go away for extended periods, you miss this person so much that you cut your trip short to get back home? i'm trying to find a balance, and i'd really appreciate your input!

Hi, I want to travel to England to see my mother and travel there on the Celebrity Constellation cruise ship. It leaves Bayonne NJ on the 28th of April with the destination of Dover England. I really want to share the cabin so as to reduce the financial cost. Presently I have an interior cabin on hold until Monday 13th February, the cabin is available for $454 each. Any one interested in joining me (I have no preference as far as gender classification for sharing the cabin) ? Bye for now, Jamshed.

Might as well just hit two in one.

First, any reccomendations on comfy long-use hikers? Preferably lightweight, tough, waterproof. Also sandals that can be comfortably hiked in/worn with socks?

Secondly, anyone have any experiences with peace corps they would like to share? I am considering joining. I am a little skeptical about government programs, I just want to live in another country, and help. I don't know of a better way to do it. (with no money) I would appreciate counsel. :)

Namaste,

Menses and traveling <as> abroad?

So I just got back from my dr's appt-ya know, the o' so fun annual exam, and was asking about my travel immunizations, etc. and she mentioned the ability to regulate my flow by skipping the placebo pills in your montly pack and going right to the next month's pack so I could travel without worrying about cycling while in an Asian country not really up on my "needs" (squat toilets, lacking supplies...etc). Has anyone tried this whose willing to share their experiences- do you still suffer from cramps and general pms, bitchiness, and bloat? My apologies if it's considered to inappropriate to discuss this here-I'm double posting this on ****ing PMS tribe.

Thanks all :)

Has anyone here travelled alone in Northern India? Any good advice, if this is what I want to do?

Also has anyone experience with the Indrail passes?

Thank you for any input you can give me :)

10x more challenging...?

I encourage lots of people (men and women) to travel, and help them to overcome their fears.

Is it really 10x more challenging for women to travel in many parts of the world?

My 2nd hand experience tells me that this is true for a few, mostly Islamic countries, but not generally true at all.

Also, Kat, I wonder if a more encouraging (i.e. you can do this), less scary, introduction for this tribe might be a good idea.

Cheers,
-Adam

Solo Female Travel to Kenya

I posted this to "All About Travel" also. I hate the redundancy, but I'm leaving on very short notice and wanted to make sure that I get as much advice as possible...

I'll be making a quick trip to the Nairobi area for about 15 days, leaving on Thursday. Wondered what the experience is for a solo (female) traveler. This is a spur of the moment decision and I have no plans yet (so all input is welcome), but I foresee a lot of walking, absorbing, land travel and scoping out areas around Nairobi, including Kitui. I'm ok with having no itinerary also.

Does anyone have any recommendations on safe places to stay and use as my hq or any other tips?

New- Hello! Britain- ISO info, contacts, travel partner(s).

Yo travel divas! Thought I'd be polite & say hi, as befits a newbie to this tribe. Have traveled on my own lots in this country, a bit in Mexico. Traveling with others, been to aforementioned, Spain, Portugal & Morocco, around the Caribbean, Colombia. I'm independent, street-smart, & a young-ish 46, singer, poet, artist, Jewitch. Night person insomniac- which can be tough on the road- often means I travel more slowly, & leave later when I can. But I have a great attitude, & I'm resourceful.

I'm beginning to plan my 1st trip to Britan leaving in early spring. Live in OR, but likely will leave out of NY, where we'd probably have to stop anyway & I have family. I'll be traveling low-budget, not hand-to-mouth. (Thankfully no longer have to sleep in train staions, squats & hostel dorms, which can be less fun as one gets older). Movin' on up to B& Bs, budget hotels, private hostel rooms, possibly a campervan for some of the Scottish highlands & some other ares of countryside where public transport is thin. Plan to leave around late March-early April for decent weather w/ shoulder-season prices.
I'm reading up; the usual Lonely Planet, Rick Steves & other travel guides, websites (Journeywoman is one I like) etc. Not sure how long I'm going for, at this point could be as little as 2 1/2 weeks mostly in London & points close, or may be around 2 1/2 months. Depends partially on $, & what kind of contacts & possble travel partnering I can conjure up. I'll find lots of things on my own, but why not ask the collective wisdom of this tribe, too? I'm putting it out there & seeing what happens:

1) Contacts- especially in the artistic, Pagan & Jewish communities. I may be there for Passover- anyone know a good liberal Jewish community center, group or temple where maybe I could go to a Seder? Beltane! Might be there then, or it'd just be great to do a moon circle, or go see sacred sites w/ others of earth-based faith. (of course I'll check out pagan bookstores, & goth clubs in a pinch). Poets, artists, musicians, actors.

2) Travel partner(s). around 30 or older. (Not to dis the very young women, but I prefer someone w/ more life exp, & don't want to deal w/ a strong possibility of a mother-daughter dynamic cropping up). Have traveled on yr own & liked it.
I'm dependable, but really flexible on this. Could be for a day, an evening, or much of the trip. Would be great to split some expenses, like car or van rental, gas, possibly share a room a time or 2, & see how that goes. I'm friendly, & meet people pretty easily, but it's nice sometimes to have a companion for theater, music, parks, eating out, exploring. I'm a geek, & will spend lots of time at museums & historic sites, musty bookstores. But I'm also waaay fun & pretty adventurous. Please be able to take care of yrself, flexible, cover yr expenses.
No interest in being attached at the hip, & want to be free to pursue what I'd like to do, while extending the same freedom. I do stay up late & sleep in a lot. Not noisy, but want to at least have a reading lamp on, & not be woken up early. (I always bring earplugs). At least sometimes, I'd want my own sleepspace, OK w/ it being the whole trip, if necessary. If we part ways to pursue our own interests, that's OK as long as we work things out if we're combining funds for something, & can't get refund, for example. I'm a clear communicator, try to stay calm, compassionate & keep a sense of humor- you be, too.

3) just any useful info on good places to stay & eat especially in spendy London. Fine w/ shared bath, small clean rooms. Would like a decent bed. Prefer no lockouts, relatively quiet, fairly central (no 'burbs). Bonus would be any use of a kitchen, fun artsy neighborhoods w/ good cheap eats, a garden or courtyard, fridges or microwaves, some charm. Don't care about incl. breakfast much- I'll usually sleep thru it, unless it's after 10am. **** Also favorite pubs, thrift shops, galleries, tea & coffeehouses, spoken word scene, performance spaces & theatres, off-beat sights, etc. Not much into clubbing or raves these days, but I do love live music.

OK, now let's see what comes my way...

Currently I am in Cairo staying with my aunt and uncle, and for the holidays I am off to Lebanon to visit a friend. After the new year I have been planning on traveling Turkey alone. I have traveled in europe alone before, and having experienced islamic culture in Cairo, so I have learned how to dress, and just to ignore the men. Unfortunately though, my mother and grandmother are all worked up at the idea of me being alone in Turkey. So to put them at ease I am looking for any possible travel buddies for the begining of January.

Am back from solo backpacking in the UK. The next trip needs beaches. Went to Grenada last Feb -- loved it. Am planning a 10 day trip for late April this year. Considering a return to the Caribbean. Would probably be going with my significant other. Favourite island features:
--few crowds - prefer little hotels to resorts
--beaches

Any suggestions for which island fits the bill?

I've never been before, I don't mind going alone, I kind of would like to since I have never travelled alone before. But I was thinking of asking my boyfriend to go with me. He's never been either.I just figure it would be nice to enjoy Europe with someone.

I'm leaving for Nicaragua this upcoming Thursday to work with a fair trade, fair wage women's cooperative to make our clothing. It is in Nueva Vida, but we'll be headed down to the main island Ometepe. Any suggestions while we're down there? This is a trip that I actually am bringing my boyfriend along with since the factory is just outside of Managua, and I hear that it's a pretty dangerous place.

It's a forum for "us" to talk about our observations on culture, and talk freely about some of the changes we see our peers going through. It sounds stuffy, but it's not!

Yacht Work
125 foot yacht w/ excellent crew accomodations needs year-round stewardess or steward/massage therapist. Or you could also work as deck hand but the massage ability is important. Yacht is between Boston and Sag Harbor summers to late fall, then Florida and Caribbean and in Mediterranean late spring. It is privately owned by one man and will be used by him 80 to 90% of year and chartered only once a year for 6 weeks. This is a full-time, long term position. 4k per mo. Boat has crew of 5 to 7.

My life in Afghanistan

I'm here in Afghanistan witnessing a quite historical transition to a country-wide parliament. Like with many transitions, this one is bumpy. To establish civic education programs and the logistics of polling centers and ballot paper/box deliveries alone is enough of a challenge in a country with so few roads and infrastructure. To add to all of these challenges, these elections are delving into disputed warlord territory and the Taliban still has a number of strongholds in the southern and eastern regions of the country. Over the past couple of months, several candidates have been assassinated, one mosque which was a registration center was bombed, several mullahs (heads of mosques) have been killed for voicing their anti-Taliban/warlord stances, 17 national elections security aids were beheaded etc. Kabul has been quiet because it's strongly reinforced with NATO security and the donation of troops from individual countries, but this is a bubble that does not completely reflect a lot of places in the country and could pop at any minute.

It all makes the odds of an evolution for this war-torn country sound pretty slim, but then there's the other side to consider.

I was sitting with a fellow colleague this morning who has been working with this transitional government of Afghanistan since early 2002. He told me how many transitions in life are hard, especially when a country is leaving a quarter-century of war. He told me that he thinks that it will work out here and that Afghanistan could be a great example of peace in 10 years time, but it takes time!

This is what a lot of Afghans tell me when I ask them how they feel.

One example of how Afghanistan is changing is still quite fresh in my mind. The other night, a good friend of mine cancelled a dinner with me because she had to stay and settle a fight at her office. She works for a non-governmental media organization here in Kabul. The fight was between the young and the older generation of men. The young wanted to publish an article about how the burka should be a choice, not a rule issued by men. The older didn't believe in the statement of this article. This is quite an obvious generation gap here that leads many to believe that relatively soon, things may be a bit easier here i.e. women going without covering their heads on the streets, men and women talking on the streets without their elders showing disgust because of archaic belief that men and women should only talk after marriage unless they're related.

Another example-Just last night, a BBC reporter was telling me how recently a mullah invited a female candidate to speak about her candidacy at a mosque. This was a first for Afghanistan's history. Women aren't even allowed in mosques. This was a very powerful and evolved motion.

I here many stories like this seeping from the cracks of this devastated land. The majority of people here want to move on and rise up. How I feel to witness this goes beyond words.

And the last point to consider-

This is the first time for a country-wide parliament, and it's definitely a test-run. The parliament will have female representation. There's a mandated representation that will happen no matter what. Even if women in certain provinces don't receive more votes than men on Election Day, the women with the most votes will be appointed to the allotted seats in the parliament. Afghanistan may soon have more women in Parliament than in my own country…Interesting.

With all of this in mind (no matter how the elections go), it's obvious that Afghanistan is on the road to a new time. As I've said before, I believe that this external world completely reflects the human state and that something about this situation in what I like to call "the middle earth" (for political and geographical reasons and because many people here look and talk like hobbits) can speak to us about our inevitable evolution-even with the given obstacles.
